More Than Photography | Why Mentoring Matters

One of my favorite things about being a photographer isn't actually taking photographs.

Don't get me wrong. I absolutely love photographing all the things….. weddings, families, seniors, and all of life's beautiful milestones. There is nothing quite like handing someone a gallery that tells the story of their day or season in life.

But somewhere along the way, I discovered another passion.

Helping other photographers.

If you've followed krisann photography for a while, you probably know that I occasionally offer one-on-one photography mentorships. What you may not know is why they're so important to me.

The answer is simple.

Because someone once took the time to help me.

And I'll never forget what that meant.

We All Start Somewhere

Every photographer remembers what it felt like in the beginning.

Wondering if your camera settings are right.

Second-guessing every photo you edit.

Feeling nervous before your first paid session.

Questioning whether you're "good enough."

I remember those days well.

Photography is an incredible profession, but it can also feel incredibly lonely. There are endless YouTube videos, online courses, Facebook groups, and tutorials. Yet somehow, you can still feel like you're figuring everything out by yourself.

There are also the sleepless nights spent doom-scrolling the interwebs, comparing yourself to the numerous other photographers out there.

I know those feelings well.

And I never want another photographer to feel like they have to navigate this journey alone.

Community Over Competition

If there's one thing I hope to encourage in our photography industry, it's this :

There is room for all of us.

I truly believe that.

Your success doesn't take away from mine.

My success doesn't take away from yours.

Every photographer sees the world differently.

Every artist brings something unique behind the camera.

Every couple, every family, every senior deserves to find the photographer whose style and personality connects with them.

That's why I've never believed photography should be about competition.

I believe it should be about community.

When we encourage one another, answer questions, celebrate victories, and offer guidance instead of gatekeeping, everyone grows.

The photography community becomes stronger.

And honestly?

Life becomes a whole lot more enjoyable.

I Don't Have All the Answers

One thing I always tell photographers who mentor with me is this :

I don't know everything.

I'm still learning too.

After years of photographing weddings, families, branding sessions, and portraits throughout Southern California, I still discover new techniques, better workflows, and fresh ways to approach different situations.

Photography is one of those careers where you never truly stop learning and growing.

That's one of the things I love most about it.

My goal isn't to present myself as someone who has it all figured out.

It's simply to share what I've learned so far and hopefully help someone else avoid a few of the mistakes I made along the way.

More Than Camera Settings

Of course we'll talk about lighting.

We'll cover camera settings.

We'll discuss posing, composition, and creating natural, authentic images.

But some of the most valuable conversations have very little to do with photography itself.

How do you price your work?

When should you raise your prices?

How do you respond to difficult clients?

How do you build confidence?

How do you balance business and family?

How do you serve your clients well while still protecting your own time?

These are the questions that often make the biggest difference.

Because building a successful photography business isn't just about taking beautiful photos.

It's about building a sustainable business.

Confidence Changes Everything

One of the greatest joys of mentoring is watching confidence begin to grow.

Sometimes it happens during a portrait session when everything finally clicks.

Sometimes it's seeing someone nail manual mode for the first time.

Sometimes it's hearing them say,

"I actually understand this now."

Those moments never get old.

Watching another photographer realize they're capable of so much more than they believed is incredibly rewarding.

Why I Offer One-on-One Mentorships

I intentionally keep my mentorships personal.

I want you to feel comfortable asking questions.

No question is too small.

No topic is off limits.
