Camera-Ready | 10 Confidence-Boosting Tips to Feel Comfortable in Front of the Lens
I hear it all the time—“I’m so awkward in front of the camera.” Or, “I never know what to do with my hands.” Trust me, you’re not alone! Whether you're getting portraits taken for the first time in years, planning a family session, or stepping in front of the lens for a branding shoot—feeling nervous is completely normal.
As a photographer, one of my favorite parts of what I do is helping everyday people—just like you—feel confident, comfortable, and beautiful in front of the camera. Because here’s the truth: you don’t need to be a model to look amazing in your photos. You just need to feel at ease and be yourself.
So today, I’m sharing my top 10 tips to help you do exactly that. These are the same things I share with my own clients before every session with because everyone deserves to feel confident in their story.
1. Wear What Makes You Feel Good
First things first : pick an outfit (or two) that feels like you. Something you feel confident in. Forget Pinterest trends if they don’t match your vibe. If you’re uncomfortable in your clothes, it’ll show. Choose pieces that fit well, reflect your style, and allow you to move with ease.
Bonus Tip: Solid colors and soft neutrals always photograph beautifully—especially in natural light.
2. Practice a Little Beforehand
It might feel silly, but take a few minutes to look in the mirror and try different expressions or angles. Smile naturally, look off to the side, adjust your posture. You’re just getting familiar with what feels good for you—no pressure!
3. Let Me Guide You
You don’t need to worry about what to do. That’s what I’m here for! I’ll gently guide you with prompts, natural poses, and little movements that feel relaxed and effortless. We’ll keep it light and easy, and I promise you—nothing stiff or overly posed.
4. Think Emotion, Not Perfection
My goal isn’t to capture a “perfect” photo. It’s to capture you—your joy, your personality, your connection with the people you love. Focus on how you feel, not how you think you look. That’s where the magic happens.
5. Bring Some Good Vibes
Want to bring a friend? Go for it! Want to play a favorite playlist during your session? Yes, please. Whether it's a few upbeat songs or someone you trust to help you relax, good energy makes a big difference.
6. Keep Moving
Instead of standing perfectly still, I’ll encourage you to shift your weight, walk slowly, laugh, or move naturally. These micro-movements help you look more relaxed and feel less stiff. (And they make for the best candid moments!)
7. Laugh It Off
Awkward moments? They’re part of the fun! We’ll absolutely have a few goofy shots, maybe some outtakes—but that’s part of the process. Laugh it off and keep going. Your real, natural smile right after a laugh? That’s gold.
8. Ask Questions Before Your Shoot
I always encourage clients to ask anything they’re wondering about before their session. Outfit tips? Hair and makeup help? Session flow? I’ve got you. Knowing what to expect takes so much stress off your plate.
9. Show Yourself Some Grace
I get it—we’re all a little hard on ourselves. But you are worthy of being seen, just as you are. You don’t need to lose weight or change anything to deserve beautiful photos. The most powerful thing you can bring to your session is confidence in your real self.
10. Remember the Why
This is about you—your season of life, your family, your business, your love. Photos aren't just about looking good; they’re about preserving what matters most. Let that be your focus. The confidence will follow.
