The Season Before Everything Changes | A Heisler Park Mother-Daughter Story
There are sessions you photograph…
And then there are sessions you feel.
Last spring, I spent the most beautiful, sun-drenched afternoon in Laguna Beach at Heisler Park with Sylvia and her daughter, Angel. And I’m still smiling thinking about it.
It was one of those perfect Southern California days. Blue skies. Ocean breeze. The kind of light photographers dream about. We stopped for lunch, wandered the paths at Heisler Park, grabbed coffee, talked about life, and yes, took absolutely gorgeous photos in between.
But what made this session special wasn’t just the location (though Laguna Beach never disappoints). It was the season they’re in.
Angel is graduating high school soon.
And if you’re a mom reading this, you already know, that sentence carries weight.
The Senior Year Season
Senior year is this strange, beautiful mix of celebration and “wait… how did we get here?”
You’re proud. You’re excited. You’re planning.
And somewhere in the middle of it all, you realize your baby isn’t really a baby anymore.
Watching Sylvia with Angel during this session was so sweet. There’s this quiet understanding between them. Laughter, shared looks, the kind of inside jokes only mothers and daughters have.
At one point I remember thinking : this is why I do what I do.
Not just for the portraits.
But for this.
The in-between moments. The walking and talking. The way Sylvia looked at Angel when she wasn’t even aware of it. The way Angel leaned into her mom without even thinking.
Heisler Park Will Always Be a Favorite
If you’ve ever been to Heisler Park, you know it’s something special. The cliffs, the coastal paths, the ocean stretching endlessly behind you. It’s effortlessly stunning.
But the real beauty that day wasn’t the Pacific.
It was this chapter.
Angel standing right on the edge of something new. Big dreams. Big plans.
And Sylvia soaking in every second.
We captured:
Soft, glowing portraits with the ocean behind them
Laughter walking along the bluff
Quiet moments sitting close
That proud-mama look (you know the one)
And honestly? Some of my favorite images are the ones where they’re just talking. Not posed. Not prompted. Just being.
A Little Bit Bittersweet
I always tell moms, especially during senior year, get in the photos.
I know. There’s a check list of things that you’d like to do first. Or you’ll say you’ll do it “next time.”
But this season doesn’t wait.
Sylvia showed up. And years from now, Angel will have these images of the two of them in this exact moment of life, right before everything changes.
And that’s priceless.
Spring in Laguna Beach
Spring sessions in Laguna Beach have a different kind of energy. The air feels hopeful. The light feels fresh. Everything feels like it’s on the verge of becoming something new.
Which feels fitting for senior year, doesn’t it?
Sylvia and Angel, thank you for trusting me with this chapter. It was such a joy spending that sunny afternoon with you. And yes, the coffee definitely made it even better.
This is what it’s all about.
Not just beautiful photos.
But remembering who you were, together, in this season.
