5 Ways to Totally Slay Your Engagement Session (Without the Stress)
Hey lovebirds! It’s Kristi here — your friendly neighborhood third wheel, hype woman, and engagement photo pro behind the lens at krisann photography. First off, congrats on saying yes to forever! This season is full of joy, celebration, and let’s be honest — a few Pinterest boards worth of planning.
If you’re prepping for your engagement session and wondering how to make it as dreamy and effortless as those swoon-worthy shots you’ve been saving, don’t worry—I got you. Here are 5 ways to totally slay your engagement session, feel confident in front of the camera, and walk away with photos that feel like you (but make it cinematic).
1. Choose Outfits That Feel Like YOU (But Elevated)
Let’s keep it real—your engagement session is not the time to reinvent yourself. You don’t have to show up in a ballgown or rent a tux to make magic happen (unless that’s your thing—then YAAAS ).
Pick outfits that reflect your personality but photograph well. Flowy dresses, earthy tones, and coordinated—but not matchy—looks are my go-to recs. And yes, textures like linen, cotton, denim, or knits are chef’s kiss on camera. Bring a backup outfit for variety and movement. Oh, and leave the neon at home—we’re here for timeless, not traffic cone vibes.
2. Trust Me on Timing (Golden Hour Is Queen)
Lighting can make or break your session, and golden hour is basically Mother Nature’s Instagram filter. That’s the dreamy, glowing magic that happens about an hour before sunset (or after sunrise if you're a morning person... bless you).
We’ll schedule your shoot during that soft light window to make sure your photos have that warm, romantic feel—without any harsh shadows or squinty eyes.
3. Be Lovey, Not Posed
The goal? Real connection. I’ll guide you every step of the way—no stiff prom poses or awkward hand placement here. I’ll prompt you to laugh, dance, whisper silly things, or just snuggle close while I capture those genuine moments in between.
If you're nervous in front of the camera, don’t worry—I’ll direct you in a way that feels natural, fun, and never forced. I’m here to highlight your connection, not turn you into mannequins.
4. Think Location, Location, Location
Where you shoot totally sets the vibe. Want beachy, barefoot romance? A woodsy mountain stroll? An urban rooftop moment? Let’s dream it up together. I know some hidden gems all over Southern California that make for magical backdrops.
Bonus tip : pick somewhere meaningful—a favorite trail, your proposal spot, or even your own backyard (yes, trust me, I’ve made backyard sessions look like editorial spreads).
5. Make It a Date Night
Turn your session into a celebration, not just a task. Plan to grab dinner or dessert afterward—because you’ll be all dressed up, glowing, and feeling the love. Not to mention, getting cozy in front of the camera is a bonding experience in itself.
And if you bring champagne to pop or your pup to join, I’m 1000% on board. Little personal touches make your session uniquely YOU.
In Closing...
You don’t have to be models to look like models. With a little prep and a lot of love, your engagement session will be unforgettable—and I’ll be there to cheer you on, snap every magical moment, and probably cry happy tears behind the camera (yes, I’m that photographer).
